Sayonara

After extensive training stuffing myself at Kulu Kulu, I feel prepared for my upcoming 13-day trip to Japan.

I will be meeting up with Angus, who has been teaching English in South Korea, and has a hilarious blog about it.

I'm off tomorrow evening; and thanks to the wonders of online check-in, I only have to be at the airport 45 minutes before departure! With a two-day flight ahead of me, that makes me love the Internet so, so much.

The Smallest Flat in London

mousehouse.jpgNewspapers are gleefully reporting the smallest flat in London—62 square feet (counting 3 foot bed loft) and £135 per week.

This type of thing is great, both for non-Londoners to mock our gullibility, and Londoners to slyly back-slap ourselves over how desirable our home is.

I'm just pleased that it makes my new studio in Stoke Newington feel palatial in comparison!

Feminism Dead: Kuwaiti women gain right to vote

It's hard to get happy abut something so long overdue, but- yay! Kuwait, the last country on earth that was democratic for men only, has now granted women the right to vote.

Go 2005! No doubt rocket cars and food in pill format are not far behind.

(The title comes from something that a male acquaintance of mine actually said to me in all seriousness, "what's the point of feminism; you have the right to vote.")

Women and votes: A brief history

- New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote, in 1893.

- Three countries deny both men and women a vote - Brunei, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

- In South Africa, white women won the vote in 1931, Indian and "coloured" women in 1984, and black women in 1994.

- France saw a gap of 98 years between male and female suffrage. Men got the vote in 1848 and women in 1944.

- Swiss women were only allowed in voting booths in 1971.

- Bahrain was the most recent country to give women the vote - in 2001.

I am metroblogging London

I am now a contributer to Metroblogging London. Hey look, there's my first post, about the West Reservoir!

If you don't already know about this Metroblogging malarky, here's an LA Times article about the original, Metroblogging LA.

The first step in the dream of being as overexposed as Xeni Jardin.

Big George kicks senate butt

Although I didn't vote for George Galloway in my constituency, I back the kid 100 per cent in his recent trip to the US Senate to face charges that he scammed the Oil for Food program.

British political snark is just so refreshing compared to US/Canadian windbaggery.

"As a matter of fact I have met Saddam Hussein exactly the same number of times that (Secretary of Defense) Donald Rumsfeld met him," said the recently reelected British parliamentarian. "The difference is that Donald Rumsfeld met him to sell him guns."
