On Angus and my visit to Japan, we stayed at a very lovely and inexpensive ryokan (traditional Japanese-style inn - more like a hostel in this case though).
The owners sent me an email announcing their new ryokan, and it made me remember what a fantastic time I had in Japan, and how much I enjoyed myself at their place. So this is a plug for them: Toyko Ryokan.
